5 Main Types of Hemorrhoids and Their Symptoms

How do you know if you’ve got hemorrhoids and are there different types of treatment for each kind of hemorrhoid? These are vital questions to answer if you are working out how to treat hemorrhoids.

Internal Hemorrhoid

The internal hemorrhoid is the one which is most likely to bleed, leading to blood in the toilet after having a bowel motion, or blood mixed in with your poo. It can be very frightening to see blood like that, but don’t panic – this is very common. You only need to be concerned if it carries on for more than a few weeks or doesn’t respond to a natural hemorrhoid cure – if it still carries on, consult a doctor right away. You may not feel any pain with an internal hemorrhoid, or only when actually passing a motion, or you may feel as though there is some kind of obstruction in your anal passage.

External Hemorrhoid

As the name suggests, an external hemorrhoid is outside the anal canal – in other words you can probably feel it at the entrance to your anus. It will probably feel like a small, very tender lump which is sore to touch, will get irritated by your clothing or when you are walking, cycling, sitting or running (just living, in other words!). It will also be VERY sore when you are going to the toilet, and may bleed a little, showing up as blood on the toilet paper.

Thrombosed Hemorrhoid

If the lump on your bum is hard and gives you a sharp pain when walking or sitting, you may well have a thrombosed hemorrhoid. These don’t bleed, but are excruciatingly painful.

Fissure Hemorrhoid

If you only have a tiny bit of blood on the paper, but a great deal of pain just inside the entrance to your anus, you are likely to have a fissure hemorrhoid. These are agonisingly painful.

Prolapsed Hemorrhoid

This causes some blood in the toilet and a lump which comes out of your anus when passing a bowel motion. It is likely to be very sensitive, itchy and sore – rather like an external hemorrhoid, but they can sometimes be encouraged to go back inside the anus by pushing them gently with a clean, lubricated finger. This doesn’t cure the hemorrhoid, but it does make it less painful.
