Although hemorrhoids are not life threatening, they make a patient’s life difficult with an irritating set of symptoms. People suffering from this condition experience extreme pain and discomfort in the anal region. Understanding and identifying the symptoms of the condition are a must to ensure early detection and treatment.
Internal and External Hemorrhoids: Symptoms
Based on the type of hemorrhoids, symptoms too vary in the following ways:
Internal Hemorrhoids: Bright red blood traces in the feces, toilet bowl or toilet paper.
External Hemorrhoids: Painful swelling and hard lumps around the anus resulting in blood clot.
Some Common Hemorrhoids Symptoms
Several other problems, such as fissures, abscesses and fistulae, have similar symptoms. However, these are sometimes incorrectly interpreted as hemorrhoids. To aid their detection, here are some common hemorrhoids symptoms:
Itching: Itching is caused by the seepage of fluids from the hemorrhoids. This leads to irritation or itching in the anal region. Since this irritation takes place in the fragile tissues, it makes the patient feel extremely uncomfortable.
Bleeding: This is one of the most common symptoms of hemorrhoids. Bleeding is generally detected after a bowel movement, when blood stains are found on the toilet paper or toilet seat. The bleeding is generally painless and in traces. So, the next time you detect bright red blood on your toilet paper, don’t panic. You have most likely developed hemorrhoids.
Anal Leakage: The development of large protrusions due to advanced hemorrhoids causes the rectum to remain open. This might lead to the leakage of feces from the anus, leading to stains on undergarments. Hence, constant staining of undergarments could be an indication of the worsening of hemorrhoids.
Protrusions: The advanced stages of hemorrhoids are marked by the development of protrusions in the anus. These are hard lumps which can hurt if pressed. You can feel them while having a bowel movement or while wiping out the area with a toilet paper.
